For all those Golden Era hip-hop heads who spent the entire summer of 1995 running the streets, wasting money, killing time, making mischief, and listening to Raekwon's Only Built 4 Cuban Linx on repeat, the first few bars of click-clack like "Ice Cream," "Guillotine," "Verbal Intercouse," "Criminology," or "Incarcerated Scarfaces" will instantaneously trigger a scattershot blast of heady memories.
The smell of sweet sticky weed. The taste of malt liquor straight from the freezer. The feel of a hot body in a six-floor apartment with broken air-conditioning. The sound of a beeper going off at midnight. The look and weight of a freshly snatched platinum chain.
Now we can't go back to '95. But we can still kick it with Raekwon the Chef at Eve next Friday. It'll be the next best thing. And guaranteed, he's gonna pop off a few classic Cuban Linx cuts between tracks from his just-released album Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang.
So yeah, there'll be some old shit and there'll be some new shit. And since it's almost summer again, you might even make a few fresh memories.
Raekwon. Friday, May 27, at Eve, 1306 N. Miami Ave., Miami. The show starts at 8 p.m. and tickets cost $20 to $25 via inticketing.com. Call 305-995-5050 or visit miamieve.com.
