Electric Pickle Hosts Free Lunch Break Dance Party With Peanut Butter Wolf

Have you ever been sitting at your desk around noon, and suddenly you feel like Billy Elliot? It's like you're possessed by the dancing spirit of Bob Fosse. Your heartbeat starts to sound like a low booming bass, and you just need to explore this burning desire to move.

The party folks over at media trendsetters Flavorpill and the sparkling aqua peeps at Perrier know exactly how this feels. So they've launched a new kind of daytime dance party called Lunch Break, Made Extraordinary by Perrier. There will be six impressive, 60-minute, high-energy dance parties in Chicago, Miami, New York City, and Los Angeles on three days this month: August 14, 21, and 28.

Miami's Lunch Break will take place at Electric Pickle this Friday from 1 to 2 p.m. with Stones Throw Records' founder Chris Manak, AKA Peanut Butter Wolf. He says he's not sure if he'll be spinning vinyl, playing from his computer, or both, but he's happy he got the first Miami slot, because it fits smoothly into his schedule. He's heading straight to the U.K. from L.A., and it'll help him keep his jet lag at bay. "DJ'ing even allows me to do things I might not have been able to do had I chosen another career path," he admits. 

Flavorpill's senior content manager, Leah Taylor, says  the company is about "elevating the ordinary to extraordinary levels. So we teamed up to make the most extraordinary lunch break possible. Because what's more mundane than eating reheated leftovers at your desk? We wanted to transform it entirely." The Feeding South Florida food bank will also be setting up shop at the Pickle and accepting your "unused lunch money" for the greater good. Also, to get your toes tapping quickly, you'll be offered a signature cocktail from Perrier and leave with a bag lunch to suck down at your desk. 


But back to Peanut Butter Wolf. He alerted us to some great things happening over at Stones Throw. NxWorries' lead vocalist, Anderson Paak, is featured on four tracks on Dr. Dre's recently released Compton. He says the group just finished its own album and is soon to kick off a U.S. tour with Odd Future's Earl Sweatshirt. "We expect them to be the 'next big thing' for Stones Throw," he explains.

Also very cool, Stones Throw is releasing an Egyptian Lover vinyl box-set anthology. "Along with that, we are pressing a triangle-shaped record and what we believe to be the first three-dimensional, 'pyramid-shaped' record cover, using magnets to keep its shape. Hard to explain, but it looks really cool!" Sounds really cool as well. 

Last year, an indie film about the label, Our Vinyl Weighs a Ton, was released to great praise. Peanut Butter Wolf was very happy about it. "You have to realize, I've been DJ'ing in my bedroom and making beats since 1985 and releasing records since 1990, so it really helped give my career a booster shot to a new generation. Most of my audience I spin for was born after 1985, so it feels good to still be doing what I was doing when I was a teenager. Hip-hop fans are usually on to the next every few years. And the coolest thing about my journey for me is that I've never had a hit record yet. Strictly underground."


Besides the dance party this Friday, we had to know if Stones Throw was planning to hit Winter Music Conference next year. He explains, "We used to have a great time at WMC. I have a lot of memories through the years from our Hella International party — that's what we used to call it. That being said, we stopped going to Miami as our roster got less DJ-oriented and WMC became more and more EDM-based and less soulful, which made it harder for us to find sponsors to help offset our costs."

That does suck and all, but the Wolf did drop some good news the label's legion of superfans can look forward to. "Next year is our 20-year anniversary, though, so I hope to do a big blowout in Miami and bring back the funk and soul and hip-hop for those who care." This Friday at the Pickle, in place of lunch, it's likely the locals will show PBW just how much they care, not just about the party and the Perrier but about the music.
