If you say you've never bought an album because it had a sweet cover, you'd be a giant, fake-cool liar.
The saddest part of downloading music isn't just the demise of the music industry. It's that we no longer get to enjoy amazing cover art or oddly personal liner notes or judge a record by its album jacket.
Still, artist Dana Schutz won't stop making paintings inspired by music. She has created works about Kim and Kelly Deal, Kim Gordon, and the King of Pop. And these pieces -- The Breeders, Her Arms, and Autopsy of Michael Jackson, respectively -- bring musical icons to fine art in a way that is creepy, comedic, and absurd.
In a way, paintings like Schutz's make saying goodbye to album art less tragic.
At only 35, Schutz is already exhibiting a ten-year survey of her work at the Miami Art Museum. The show, If the Face Had Wheels, was organized by the Neuberger Museum of Art and landed her on the November cover of Art in America.
Following the opening of Schutz' show on January 14, the organization has planned a Miami Playlist Party at the Standard Spa with the artist herself. The hotel has housed five previous Playlist Parties featuring guests like O, Miami's P. Scott Cunningham and Rhythm Foundation's Laura Quinlan.
Host Esther Park says it's "nothing crazy, just you and your all-time top ten songs." After we hear the tunes, the "DJs" explain why they chose them. "It's a nice show-and-tell of your favorite songs and a great way to meet new people and discover new music," she added. This time, we'll get a taste of the museum's audio faves with playlists by Schutz, MAM's chief curator Tobias Ostrander, and director of education and public programs Emily Mello.
