Hear the term Latin American art and you might expect bright paintings of tropical landscapes, bull fighters swirling their capes, and maybe even a sultry mulata casting a fetching glance. But then you'd be dead wrong and oblivious to the world-class art talent from the southern half of our hemisphere. Thankfully, Miami is home to the CIFO Art Space, which has played a vital role in correcting such artistic prejudices. On exhibit through November 6, "Viewpoint: 2011 CIFO Grants & Commissions Program Exhibition" features the work of artists Laura Belém (Brazil), Tania Bruguera (Cuba), Marcius Galan (Brazil), Fritzia Irizar-Rojo (Mexico), David Lamelas (Argentina), Begoña Morales (Peru), Amalia Pica (Argentina), Antonio Vega (Mexico), and Alicia Villarreal (Chile). Now in its eighth edition, the show highlights the commonalities between the artists despite their varied conceptual approaches as well as their generational and geographical divides.
Thursdays-Sundays, 10 a.m. Starts: Sept. 16. Continues through Nov. 6, 2011
