Thanks to Stitch ’n’ Bitch, knitting has passed through the transformative portal from totally lame to supercool and au courant. And if you’re the kind of chick who enjoys a good purl before you hit the club, we’re willing to wager you’re already looking out for the next hot, crafty thing to do. Might we suggest quilting? The time-honored tradition bridges the gap between generations and gives you something to do with those hideously bright ski pants you bought when you were stoned. If you’re secretly fascinated, hit up the Ocean Waves Quilters Guild QuiltFest 2008 at the Elks’ Lodge.

“Most people think of quilts as. Oh, I’m sitting in a rocking chair with my cat. But it’s exciting! This is the largest site where there will be an exhibit of contemporary and art quilts,” says the guild’s president, Joyce Cotner. This year’s theme is “It’s All About Nature,” and apparently quilters can stay hip by weaving current affairs into their handcrafted blankets and throws. Can we expect a global warming quilt on display? “There is no such thing as the quilt police. Anything is possible,” says Cotner. QuiltFest will be happening today and Saturday, and you can check out the boutique vendors and sign up for the auction today from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Fri., Feb. 29, 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., 2008
