At an almost imperceptible creep, Miami has turned into a dance center. National and local troupes now regularly deliver topnotch stuff, from ultra-contemporary and hip-hop to folk and classical ballet. There's maybe no better way to assess this arrival than looking at the 16th annual International Ballet Festival, which will run through Sunday at various venues throughout Miami-Dade. Every year at this time, Cuban-born, classically trained director Pedro Pablo Peña has been showing off internationally famous talent from across the globe. The fest usually culminates in a gala that features many of the stars who have performed. This time around, dancers from 12 companies -- from Brazil and Chile to England and Hungary -- will take part in the "Étoiles Grand Classical Gala Performance" Saturday at 8 p.m. at the Fillmore Miami Beach. This evening tops off with the presentation of A Life for Dance lifetime achievement award. The 2011 winner is great Brazilian dancer and late director of the Stuttgart Ballet, Marcia Haydée.
Sat., Sept. 17, 8 p.m., 2011
