Once upon a time, before Chili’s and Starbucks, Coconut Grove was an artist’s parish, where the free-spirited danced, painted, and played their days away. Now the population is much more likely to make harried commutes to Brickell in their BMWs, but we digress.
Twice a year, the shaded enclave reclaims its artistic roots when musicians take to the streets to celebrate music, peace, and all things summer at Fête de la Musique.
More than two dozen bands, headlined by Brazilian bossa nova crooner Rose Max, will set up shop Friday at restaurants, clubs, and other assorted 33133 venues. Tunes will cover the spectrum from folk and jazz to reggae and blues.
Even if you’re not musically inclined, you can still score food and drink specials from local haunts, everything from free glasses of champagne to 25 percent discounts on eats. After enough glasses of bubbly, you just might feel inclined to engage in a little spontaneous karaoke. But maybe don’t.
The free event runs throughout the Grove from 7 to 11 p.m., when red-beret-clad musicians will roam the area handing out maps and discounts. You can also score a map and a list of bands at fetegrove.com.
