The PLUG Independent Music Awards is a beloved celebration of independent musicians held annually in New York. Winners typically go on to become cool new bands. Former victors include Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Dangerdoom, Mr. Lif, and Gnarls Barkley. Its like the opposite of the Grammys; PLUG actually gives awards to musicians, not entertainers, explains Lauren Lolo Reskin, popular DJ-about-town and owner of Sweat Records. Few people are better qualified to organize the PLUG Miami Showcase. Buzz-worthy performers include the Down Home Southernaires, Jesse Jackson, Velveteen Pink, Feathers, and a not-so-surprising guest performance. The fabulous Shuttle Lounge will be crashing the party as they always do, laughs Reskin. Besides live music, DJ Hottpants will spin while LEBO and Francesco LoCastro paint live. Bring a plain T-shirt for screen-printing hotness courtesy of Faction. Weve got some of Miamis best acts, and I think people who havent been here in a while will be pleasantly surprised. Churchills has grown from this grimy pub in Little Haiti into this cool neighborhood spot, Reskin says. The indie fun begins tonight at 9:30 at Churchills, 5501 NE Second Ave., Miami. Admission is five dollars. Call 305-758-5682, ext. 5, or visit www.sweatrecordsmiami.com.
