July seems to be a popular time to declare independence, or liberty from tyranny. The United States is just one of several countries that celebrates its independence day this month; others include France, Colombia, and Argentina. For the last, which officially marks the date on July 9, there is no better way to celebrate Argentine history than by indulging in its most famous art form and export: the tango. Formed in the bars and brothels of Buenos Aires, it fused the various styles that were flooding into that port city at the end of the 19th Century in a unique, seductive, and fluid movement. Its influences come from rural Spain, Cuba, Eastern Europe, and Italy, to name just a few. Miami’s Tango Times Dance Company will perform Tango Baroque: The Argentine Folk & Tango Show Saturday at 8:30 p.m. at the Manuel Artime Theater (900 SW First St., Miami). The show is directed by Oscar Caballero and Roxana Garber, a duo who run a dance school in Miami when they’re not too busy choreographing and performing original shows. This “Baroque” night will feature the pair as principal dancers, with accompaniment by singer Cristina Longo and musical group Anibal Berraute Cuarteto.
