Sweet dreams are made of this, indeed

Imagine paying the mortgage by eating ice cream. That's exactly how John Harrison, the official ice cream taster for Edy's Grand Ice Cream, keeps a roof over his head. Harrison has not only sampled every flavor in the universe, he also helps develop new concoctions. He's been at ground zero for such hits as Cookies and Cream as well as French Silk. This year he's on a nationwide tour looking for new frozen taste inventions. He comes to Miami this week seeking the taste of not only Miami in the Scoop of the USA Ice Cream Taste Off. Inventors of all ages are invited to submit flavor ideas that reflect the region.

Here are a few suggestions to get the ball rolling: Guapo Guarapo, sugarcane-flavored ice cream laced with musky cologne and Calvin Klein underwear elastic. Or Palmetto Bug Parfait, guava and papaya ice cream with chocolate "insects" for that true Miami feel. Tropical Snowball Surprise could take over the world with a mouth-numbing combination of guanabana ice cream and fresh-brewed cocaine. It's just an idea.

Edy's expert appears at noon at the Hialeah Winn Dixie, 3890 W 18th Ave. Admission is free.

Star Children

Young entertainers get their chance to shine

They sing, dance, act up a storm, and, best of all, they're cute. Your charismatic children could be the next Olsen Twins. Just think: straight-to-video movies, a clothing line, and matching Range Rovers. A couple of mini gold mines in pigtails! But how to shove them into show biz without earning the label of wicked stage mother? If they're between the ages of three and fifteen, cart them to the Renaissance Biscayne Bay (1601 Biscayne Blvd.), where from 2:30 to 8:30 p.m. auditions for the new NBC reality show America's Most Talented Kid will take place. Bring their birth certificate and a pen, and don't let them wear any clothing sporting a logo. Call 888-423-9119.--NINA KORMAN
