The Alvin Ailey Dance Theater has been known as the best African-American dance company in the world — but it’s about time we take off the qualifier “African-American.” The superb troupe, with topnotch dancers, innovative choreography, and dynamic and demanding performance techniques, might be the best modern dance company in the world, period. And for the second year in a row, the Miami-born and -bred Robert Battle will be at the helm when Ailey comes to the Adrienne Arsht Center’s Ziff Ballet Opera House (1300 Biscayne Blvd., Miami) this Friday through Sunday. Battle is only the third director of the legendary company, which was founded when African-Americans were still denied the right to vote. While the company’s appeal is universal, the dances remain rooted in the black cultural experience. This year, those dances will include “Petite Mort,” “Grace,” “In/Side” and Ailey’s classic, must-see “Revelations.”
