It’s easy to find women in front of the camera in the film industry, especially in movies set in Miami. (Every beachside and poolside scene needs at least a handful of busty, generic bikini babes.) But women behind the lens? That’s a rarity. Miami’s Indie Film Club is trying to change that, at least in South Florida, with its upcoming edition of the monthly I’m Not Gonna Move to LA film competition. August’s theme is “Women With Cameras,” meaning that each of the movies competing for the prize of $1,000 in rental movie-making gear was directed by a local lady. Some, such as Colombia native Ika Santamaria, have always pursued the dramatic arts; Santamaria studied acting in Bogotá and has been directing since 2007. Others, like Cuban dancer and choreographer Bela Suazo and former Istanbul-based financial analyst Ayse Nur Gencalp, have more recently discovered their passion for telling stories on the big screen. But all will bring their own distinct vision to O Cinema (90 NW 29th St., Miami). Though the films are the main event, the rest of the evening has a girl-centric vibe too. Local funny lady Lisa Corrao is slated to perform, and offerings by women musicians will round out the evening. An as-yet-unannounced female chef will even serve treats from the kitchen. But not, y’know, barefoot or anything.
