Not all musicals are good. Even fewer are great. But Disney’s The Lion King is truly one of a kind. “There is simply nothing else like it,” said the New York Times. It’s “a landmark event in entertainment,” raved Newsweek. “It’s the tits,” quipped one excited fan. From theater critics to Broadway novices, The Lion King has delighted the masses since its 1997 musical debut at Minneapolis’s Orpheum Theatre. When in premiered on Broadway a few months later, it quickly became the biggest draw in Manhattan. Today it’s the highest-grossing Broadway show of all time, earning more than $850 million. “We’re humbled by this milestone, a feat that can be explained in two words: Julie Taymor,” show producer and president of Disney Theatrical Productions Thomas Schumacher told the Guardian. “Her vision, continued commitment to the show, and uncommon artistry account for this extraordinary success.” Combining puppetry and performance techniques from around the globe to bring Simba to life, Taymor adapted the animated film for the stage in the mid-’90s.
