Clean pair of Wranglers, full can o' Skoal, brand new Stetson, shined-up boots and belt buckle: check. Now wash the mud off the F-150 and mosey on down to the rodeo. Of course, if you're one of the 40 cowboys signed up for the championship bull riding competition, you best leave the finery at home and gird your loins for what's considered the most dangerous eight seconds in all of sports. You see, bulls ain't meant to be rode; they're ornery, weigh up to a ton, and will do anything to remove your scrawny cowboy ass from their backs. They'll try hooking you, bucking you off, or smashing you into the fence wall, then come back 'round and stomp out what's left, laughing all the while if they could. And the only thing between you and the big roundup in the sky is a guy in a clown suit. That's the Five Star Rodeo in Davie for ya, which includes a concert by Exile, the band with that '70s hit "Kiss You All Over," and lately a country act with hits like "It Ain't Easy Being Easy." On recent outings to the South Florida Water Management District's Stormwater Treatment Area 5 in Hendry County, and the sod farms of Belle Glade in Palm Beach County, a Tropical Audubon member observed the following: eleven Roseate Spoonbills, a Northern Harrier, several Fulvous Whistling Ducks, dozens of Black-necked Stilts, a Yellow-throated warbler, a pair of American Redstarts, and an abundance of bird species that fly along the western edge of Lake Okeechobee. Audubon birder Paul Bithorn leads an all-day carpool to the birding region. Admission is free.
