Just like the orphans’ hard-knock lives in the much-loved musical Annie, Miami thespians Angelica and Richard Torres have scrabbled to bring Annie, Miss Hannigan, Daddy Warbucks, and, of course, the lovable mutt Sandy to an area stage. “We really want to show what we can do,” says Angelica, who is the director and producer of Key Biscayne’s Broadway Musical Theatre program. Using about $85,000 of their own cash -- to cover the cost of lights, costumes, music, and rights to the musical -- they have assembled a cast of locals to sing, dance, and remind us the sun will come out tomorrow. A favorite of children and adults, Annie is the ultimate rags-to-riches story and a Broadway show that has helped launched the careers of the likes of Sarah Jessica Parker and The West Wing’s Allison Smith. The performance runs from Saturday, May 27, through today. Showtime is 7:00 p.m. at the Gusman Center for the Performing Arts, 174 E. Flagler St., Miami. Tickets range from $18 to $48. Call 305-358-5885 for tickets, or e-mail [email protected] for more information.
