The Haitian town of Croix-des-Bouquets pulsates with rhythm as local artists bang intricate designs out of recycled 55-gallon oil drums. There, in the heart of the Haitian metalwork movement, artists Serge Jolimeau and Michée Ramil Remy can be found removing the ends from the reclaimed cylinders, slicing the drums from top to bottom, and employing all of their strength to pound the steel into flattened metal canvases. Using hammers and chisels on the polished sheets, these artists create works of breathtaking beauty. Through May 30, the Museum of Contemporary Art will exhibit original sculptures by Jolimeau and Remy. The pieces are on loan from the office of former President Bill Clinton, who has been leading international efforts to rebuild the devastated nation after the January earthquake.
