There isn’t a person in the First World unfamiliar with the story The Wizard of Oz. A young Kansas girl named Dorothy embarks on a magnificent journey (not unlike an insane crystal meth bender so common in that region today) and befriends a cowardly lion, a scarecrow, and a shoddily built robot. Fast-forward and there are flying monkeys, the Emerald City, witches, and the Yellow Brick Road, the quality of which the Florida Department of Transportation could only dream of building. Based on L. Frank Baum’s 1900 novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, this film contains two of the best things ever to hit the silver screen: Judy Garland and midgets. Hang on, that might come off as disrespectful. The midget’s real name was Frances Ethel Gumm. There’s no better way to enjoy the nostalgic singing and witch-squashing fun than to do it outside at the beautiful New World Center SoundScape. And if a fairy-tale twister happens to transport you to a strange, faraway village, surely you know by now how to get back home. Simply click your heels together and then pull out your smartphone. Catch the alfresco screening of The Wizard of Oz this Wednesday.
