Theres rarely an onscreen Hollywood bromance that isnt threatened by the sudden arrival of a hot, young femme. She almost wrecks their friendship before the bros eventually reconcile over a Bud Light and an awkward man-hug you know the drill. However, the classic love triangle gets new life in Heartbeats, by 22-year-old Quebecois filmmaker Xavier Dolan. This time the succubus is Nicholas, a pretty stranger who rocks the bond between Francis (played by Dolan) and his flame Marie. Its like Jules et Jim for the Bravo TV crowd.
When Nicholas moves into the couples flat, the film follows the ménage à trois (which literally translates to household of three, but that doesnt mean things dont get freaky). Not knowing whether hes gay or straight, each roommate tries to seduce him. Its less efficient than simply asking him but certainly more entertaining. Heartbeats premiered in the 2010 Cannes Film Festivals Un Certain Regard category to a standing ovation and won the Sydney Film Festivals official competition.
