We're not so lucky as to have been one of those hot disco roller mamas from the '70s. That's why we're so thankful to the people of Lundi Dis Moi Oui! and Grand Central for putting together an amazing roller disco party Monday night, featuring none other than DJ Nicki Siano, original resident DJ of New York's legendary Studio 54.
We came with our gold skates and our afro wig to get down and move around, and everything -- from the decorations to the beat, the costumes and the crowd -- was over-the-top and right on the mark.
The original plan to rent roller skates fell through due to liability issues, but there were still plenty of disco babes and bosses getting their swoosh on. A makeshift rink was cleared around the perimeter, and the dance floor in the middle was cordoned off by couches.
They had the place all lit-up with disco balls and soft laser lights. The whole night, we kept thinking of that movie Boogie Nights, but without the whole suddenly dark and depressing bit.
Everyone in attendance signed waivers upon entering, just in case anything were to go down. But it should be noted that Miamians were able to simultaneously sip $5 cocktails and skate-dance without hurting themselves. There were a few slips here and there, but nothing tragic.
The opening DJ got the party rolling with old disco favorites, but the magic really turned up when Nicky Siano took control of the decks. He played some expected hits, such as "Last Night a DJ Saved My Life" and "Don't Leave Me This Way," but we most enjoyed hearing all those disco deep cuts that sounded new to our ears.
We're so proud of Miami for going all out on this one. It's hard to get people in the 305 to play dress-up, but the promise of a costume contest brought some really sexy looks. Little did we know how good some of you are at roller skating. People were going backward, flipping each other around, running through choreographed dance moves. We are pretty slick, as it turns out.
All in all, it was a fabulous evening very much worth doing again. The regular Lundis Dis Moi Oui! party (sans skating) goes down every Monday night, usually upstairs at the Garret, but we have it on some good authority that this special roller disco thing may become a monthly, or at least a more regular occurrence. But hey, why wait? Get your skates now and practice so you can be ready next time.
