Barbra Streisand has always been a force. The Grammys have declared her a legend. She's made a name for herself on the silver screen, the little screen, and stereos everywhere. It should have been obvious that The Guilt Trip was going to be a slam dunk. But I saw Seth Rogen's name, and I wavered. Babs, I'm so sorry. I should have never second-guessed you. In appreciation, here's a little roundup of just a few of Streisand's career's highlights.
The Way We Were (1973) with Robert Redford
It was in 1973 that Barbra Streisand showed us how to fall in love. The story starts in the 1930s. She's a politically-active student; he's kind of a waste of time. Their passion is fiery, unlike the dutiful romance you might image your grandparents must have had. In the end, it didn't matter how much Streisand cared for Redford and vice versa, they just weren't good together.
"The Way We Were" won the Oscar for Best Original Song
The movie established Barbra as a romantic actress, but the song got her the Oscar. "The Way We Were" won two statues that year for Best Original Dramatic Score and Best Original Song.
"You Don't Bring Me Flowers" with Neil Diamond
Streisand's hit songs have a theme; it is love lost. In "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" she sings with Neil Diamond how a relationship that's lost its passion. The song topped the Billboard Hot 100 charts in 1978. In her career, Streisand has had four songs hit number one.
Won the Golden Globe for Best Director for Yentl (1984)
Streisand not only directed, but acted in, co-wrote, and co-produced Yentl. That year she became the first woman to win the Golden Globe for directing, and she's still the only woman to have won for directing. In her acceptance speech, Streisand said that she hoped her win would help lead the way for other talented women.
The Guilt Trip isn't The Way We Were
And thank God. These are dark days that need a little brightening, and The Guilt Trip does just that. Rogen and Streisand team up in a perfect holiday flick in which he plays the young adult you hope you're not becoming, and she plays your mother. She nags her son and pesters him to drink more water (six bottles a day). She loves frogs and ;the Gap. And she makes you want to hug mom. So go. Do that.
