How did Cinco de Mayo, a historical date relevant to only one small town in Mexico, get confused with the country's real independence day? Perhaps because Dieciseis de Septiembre didn't fit as easily on a beer label. It's all the more reason to catch the Miami debut of Tania Pérez-Salas Compañia de Danza, which is celebrating the nation's real bicentennial anniversary by touring the world with Mexico's best contemporary dancers.

"Mexico is more than you can think of," says Tania Perez-Salas. "I was born in Mexico City, never studied abroad and despite of this, I believe my work represents another Mexico, that which will give another impression of the one we already have."

Known as the "muse of Mexico," Perez-Salas creates a dreamscape of

erotic, theatrical performance that seeks to translate raw human emotion

into movement. She says that her dance choreography is inspired by

"concerns, experiences, memories, and feelings...films, or literature, a

painting, a sculpture, other artistic proposals that give me a reference

of the time and the place of my existence."

The company's repertoire includes a piece set to a an abstract ballet

vocabulary and musical opera collage, a choreography that "tackles the

idea of connecting mind, body, and spirit through an exploration of

dreams and sensuality" with partially nude dancers, and a closing work

that floods the stage with water and exposes "shadowed romantic

encounters and dramatic duets." There is only one performance in Miami

before the company moves on, so peel away from TV's distorting lens and

see Mexico through the mind of one of its most visionary choreographers.

Tania Perez-Salas Compañia de Danza will perform this Saturday at 8 p.m.

at the Ziff Ballet Opera House at Adrienne Arsht Center (1300 Biscayne

Blvd., Downtown). Tickets cost $25 to $90, but with the promo code NEW TIMES, you can get two tickets for the price of one. Call 305-949-6722 or visit
