Calling Anthony Spinello a nomad is an understatement. Since he burst on the local scene at the helm of the now defunct Liquid Blue Gallery at the ripe age of 20 back in 2003, the peripatetic dealer has gone on to christen half a dozen spaces throughout Wynwood and the Design District while representing some of the 305's top emerging talent and building a program that has placed him alongside South Florida's top tier gallery names.
Representing artists such as Agustina Woodgate, Santiago Rubino, Typoe, Farley Aguilar, Sinisa Kukec and others, the 28 year-old dealer snagged New Times Best Gallery honors in 2010 and was recognized in our Best Of Issue this year for best International Art Project by Locals for his contributions with Berlin's KulturPark in which he helped turn an abandoned Cold War Era amusement park this summer into a sprawling interactive arts arcade.
Fresh back from Germany, the dynamo is set to launch his biggest space yet on just in time to kick off the season opener of the wildly popular Second Saturday Art Walk September 8 with "Americana," a solo show by Farley Aguilar to inaugurate his new digs.
Spinello is one of the latest local dealers to depart the Design District which is in the middle of a gentrification boom bringing luxury brands to the area with an eye at converting the increasingly tony neighborhood into a tropical version of Rodeo Drive.
"The Design District space was terrific while it lasted and perhaps one day we'll return--I have my eye on that historic U.S. Post Office," says Spinello. "I believe at the time (2009), moving to the Design District with Locust Projects marked an impressive growth spurt for the gallery. Since then, both the gallery and my represented artists have matured".
Located West of Wynwood, Spinello's new home is situated in a two-story converted 1940's warehouse boasting 3,000 square-feet of gallery space the dealer is calling a playground for his artists that will allow him to enrich his programming the dealer explains.
"Literally, Miami has watched us grow up right before their very eyes--inching further away from "emerging" as the years continue to roll by. Ultimately it's a matter of space, I scouted out many locations all over Miami, but this one I fell in love with and so did my artists. They gave the seal of approval," he says.
