As the iconic duo of Jake and Elwood would attest, there’s something to be said for embarking on a mission from God. So adopt an adventuresome attitude and get into the ninth South Beach Photomarathon by Tropicolor and Fotomission, the latter a not-for-profit organization that works to teach and promote photography in the hopes of driving social change. Lord knows we need some more of that. Armed with nothing more than a digital camera, an accouterment or two, and the wits the good Lord gave them, entrants will receive a series of six intentionally vague topics to shot across SoBe — 12 pics total. But no Madonna-style face-lifts or fancy filter tricks here. Actual photography skills are required. Expert judges will select the best from each topic, and first-, second-, and third-place winners will score cash prizes and Plexi prints of their sweet shots. The winners will also get face time at Tropicolor’s gallery in May. Like most things these days, the setup is almost entirely digital. Topics will be doled out every two hours via text, email, Twitter, and Facebook. So bring an extra battery, just in case.
