Whether you're a caffeine fiend who likes chugging down Red Bull, a lush who likes it with vodka, or you can't stand the stuff altogether, you have to give the Austrian energy drink company props: they can brand like a motherfreaker. Red Bull is synonymous with action sports and weird competitions; with most of it being pretty damn memorable (we especially like the airplane races and flugtag). And their latest effort, Red Bull Illume, is bringing a worldwide action sports photography competition to our white-capped shores.
The work of the 50 winners of the competition will be on display on South Beach next week. Read on for the cool details.
Red Bull Illume is a biennial competition which solicits action
photography from professional photogs and amateur clickers alike. More
than 4,300 photographers from 112 countries submitted pics to the Red
Bull Illume website last year. In total
there were 22,764 images were entered in the competitions. Fifty-three
judges from respected picture-desks chose the 50 best images and they
have been touring the world as part of an exhibit this year. Although
action sports is the overall theme, the entries were broken down into 10
categories: culture, playground, energy, spirit, close up, wings,
sequence, new creativity, experimental and illumination.
The Miami exhibit will be outdoors at Lummus Park (just next to the Art
Deco Welcome Center). After a private party on May 12, the exhibit will
be open to the public from May 13 to May 22. The exhibit is closed and
covered during the day, and opens only after 7 p.m. when the photos are
illuminated, thus the Illume name. The illuminated photos are on display
each night until 11 p.m.
The exhibition has already made stops in Ireland, Houston, and Charleston. The ten category winners are: Experimental - Daniel Grund (GER), New Creativity - Eric Berger (CAN), SanDisk Sequence - Miguel Lopez-Virgen (MEX), Energy - Stuart Gibson (AUS), Illumination - Chris Burkhard (USA), Playground - Tim Korbmacher (GER), Culture - Vincent Perraud (FRA), Spirit - Adam Kokot (POL), Wings - Marcel Lämmerhirt (GER), Close up - Nathan Smith (AUS) who was also named Athletes' Choice winner.
Red Bull Illume will be on exhibit at Lummus Park near the Art Deco
Welcome Center (1001 Ocean Dr., Miami Beach) nightly from 7 to 11 p.m.
from May 13 to May 22. For more information visit redbullillume.com.
