If you suffer from art-claustrophobia, yearning to hack through the gleaming white walls of fancy galleries and out into the world, there's no reason to feel left out during Art Basel. Primary Flight, Miami's number one purveyor of graffiti-related events, has a line-up heavy on outdoor frolicking and low on entrapment. This year, you can expect massive murals, live painting, bike tours with valet service, and an interactive "subversive" outdoor circus.
Primary Flight's main event will be the largest curated street murals
project in the world. Between 20th and 36th streets, from NE Second
Avenue to Biscayne Boulevard, top global street artists like Askew,
Shepard Fairey, Revok, Reyes, and The London Police will be contributing
dozens of murals and turning bland buildings into art shrines in
Wynwood, the Design District, and Little Haiti. There will be live
painting day and night.
You can check out the work yourself using their handy map or join the
Street.Art.Cycles: Graffiti by Bike Tour hosted by Open Streets Project. The guided tours will originate from Cafeina and visit the most important graffiti sites throughout
the area. On Friday and Saturday, cyclists can opt
to valet their bikes for free at Panther Coffee courtesy of the Green Mobility Network. It's free, with
donations benefiting the YNOT Foundation and Emerge Miami.
If hundreds of street murals don't satisfy your graffiti itch, Primary
Flight is also one of the forces behind street art expo Graffiti Gone
Global. And there's a solo exhibit by Retna at the group's brand new
space, Primary Projects.
At Cafeina, the group will help CPOP Gallery transform the usually
swanky garden into a warped big-top circus featuring common products,
brands, and games redesigned by Tristan Eaton and Trusto Corp, a
mysterious street art collective "dedicated to highlighting the
hypocrisy and hilarity of human behavior through sarcasm and satire."
The gifted vandals were last spotted in New York, tacking up
real-looking street signs with messages like "Vandalism Encouraged. 24
hours-7 days. Keep Our Streets Beautiful."
Street.Art.Cycles: Graffiti by Bike Tours will take place daily December
2-4 at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. leaving from Cafeina (297 NW 23rd St.,
Wynwood). Suggested donation is $20. Artful Big Top at Cafeina will be open
December 1 to 5 from 12 p.m. to midnight. See the full of list of events at
