For a private investigator, Ed Du Bois has had quite a career. His work helped take down Miami's infamous Sun Gym Gang in the '90s. He was immortalized in Pete Collins' three-part chronicle of the gang's activities. Now, he's being portrayed by Academy Award nominee and deathstare master Ed Harris in the Michael Bay-directed movie Pain & Gain, releasing April 26.
The next step, obviously, was country music stardom.

Du Bois released "Pain and Gain - Retribution Song" on iTunes and CDBaby this morning. It's a dark, fiddle-driven jam that Du Bois describes as an "edgy, bluesy, rock and roll song."
The liner notes explain, "I enjoyed writing and performing it almost as much as I enjoyed testifying in court as I stared down The Sun Gym Gang." Yee-haw!
You can listen to a snippet of Du Bois' song here. Its lyrics tell the tale of Sun Gym Gang victim Marc Schiller. ("It is Marc Schiller's 'Retribution Song' and he loves it," its liner notes announce.)
They stole my money
Took my home
Left me on the street
To die alone
Du Bois, who has written over 100 other songs and released two albums, promises that "Pain and Gain - Redemption Song" is just the first in a series of story-songs about life as a PI. The song's announcement promises, "Based on the sensational public response, this will be the first in a series of many more stories to come."
