DJ-producers get a bad rap. So what if Afrojack doesn’t know what a “measure” is? His music is like a paint-by-numbers picture. He’s a hook man, not a music guru. But that can’t be said for Brooklyn-based Laurel Halo and her shadowy, minimal brilliance. Halo is a classically trained musician, and her intimacy with the rules of music can be felt in the ways she breaks them. Her tracks aren’t fist-pump-ready, but they might spark a few wild body movements with a side of deep introspection. Her latest release, Chance of Rain, is an experimental journey of the spirit backed by infectious house beats. This isn’t dance music for the faint of heart. Only true fans can navigate Halo’s deep end — but the reward is ample. She’s been featured by ultimate set-streamers Boiler Room, and you can experience her live and in the mix this Thursday at Pérez Art Museum Miami (1103 Biscayne Blvd., Miami).
