When it comes to meat patties, Sef Gonzalez is Miami’s man. He’s the dude behind the iconic local food blog Burger Beast, and he’s been penning apt critiques of South Florida’s edibles since 2008.
He's not limited to his namesake burgers, either. “The Beast” writes about fritas, food trucks, and anything else worth stuffing in your face. You’ve probably spotted his “seal of approval” stickers all over town – an honor worth fighting for by local eateries.
This Saturday, Gonzalez's fourth annual Burgie Awards blowout will kick off at Esplanade Park (400 SW Second St., Fort Lauderdale). Hosted by Chat Chow TV’s Lauren Bernat, the shindig will dole out 13 awards in categories including Best Burger, Best Food Truck, Best Frita, and Best Restaurant, among others – and they’ll cover Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties.
There'll be awards, sure, but it wouldn’t be the Burgies without copious quantities of food. Dozens of food trucks will be on hand, including Bocaditos, Dim Ssam a Gogo, Mr. Good Stuff, Ms. Cheezious, and Sugar Rush (making a comeback for the event). Sadly, The Fish Box will make its last pre-retirement appearance.
