Fanning the flowing skirt of her vibrant dress, Anita sings, “I like to be in Ah-meh-ree-ca!” in perhaps one of the most memorable scenes from the film West Side Story (1961). Rita Moreno made history as the first Latina to win an Academy Award for her portrayal of Anita.
Moreno is an exceptional woman in every sense of the phrase. She is one of the few performers to have won an Oscar, a Tony, a Grammy, and two Emmy Awards. To say the least, Moreno for decades has been instrumental in paving the way for Hispanic and female performers by bulldozing barriers and challenging stereotypes. After a successful — and still thriving — career, Moreno is ready to share her story in paperback form. Rita Moreno: A Memoir (also available in Spanish), released earlier this year, recalls the incredible moments of Moreno’s life and hurdles in Hollywood.
If you never saw her live on Broadway, now is your chance to see — and hear — Rita Moreno in person at Books & Books (265 Aragon Ave., Coral Gables) Friday at 8 p.m. The event is free and bilingual, and Moreno will sign copies of her book, which will be available for purchase at the store.
