Don't you just love it when something so distinctly Miami puts the Magic City in the national spotlight, and that something doesn't involve a collective hatred from the rest of the country for our beloved Miami Heat. Yeah, us too. Luckily, as of late it's been different all stars who've been kicking ass across the airwaves. We're talking about the Miami All Stars, the dance troupe that's made it all the way to the semifinals of America's Got Talent on NBC.
We didn't think it was possible but the team of gyrating hips actually sped up traditional salsa, merengue, cumbia, and we're sure a bunch of other Latino dances (but who can actually distinguish them) to form hybrid, even faster paced dance numbers than what you see locally. We're so proud that we've actually broken an unwritten rule by discussing the show: the one that says we are never, ever, under no circumstance to mention anything even remotely associated with one of the judges on the show, Howie Mandel.
Besides the great dancing, the Miami All Stars brings several other local attributes to the national stage: tanned and tight bodies, short skirts,
girly tank tops on guys, a Pitbull soundtrack, and, of course, Spanglish.
We also found a
similarity between these all stars and our favorite basketball team -
they both speak almost entirely in clichés. The diminutive leader of the
troupe answered a question how they feel to progress to the later
stretches of the competition with a string of clichés, starting at the 5
minute mark of the video below. He also committed a classic faux pas: Don't correct the judges
when they are complimenting you. If germ freak Howie Mandel says you are
"mucho caliente," agree with him. Don't tell him he should say "muy
caliente." But we're not hating, the important part is the caliente. We hope the dancers keep it up.
The Miami All Stars will perform again in the semifinals of America's Got Talent on Tuesday at 9 p.m. on NBC.
