So the Miami-set and filmed Charlie's Angels got the boot, but at least we still have Magic City. According to the trailer for the first episode (posted after the jump), the Starz drama begins on New Year's Eve in 1959, the same day Fidel Castro took over Cuba.

In our interview with Magic City creator Mitch Glazer, he cited that year to be of particular inspiration because just two years later, Miami's Cuban population would swell from 30,000 to 250,000. He also saw transcripts from 1961, in which the CIA and the mafia met at the Fontainebleau exchanging money and talking about how to kill Castro. As the soundtrack to the first episodes croons, what a world.

And while Playboy Club was a misguided attempt to mimic the mid-century flare of Mad Men, it looks like Magic City just might give the Emmy-winning AMC series some competition this Spring.
