While politicians bullshit and news pundits engage in mudslinging, real social change takes place in the arts. Artists such as Cecilia Moreno-Yaghoubi rearrange the banalities of everyday life into meaningful social statements. The Colombian native fuses found objects, antiques, and even Barbie dolls into commentary on gender, politics, and religion. Beginning this Friday, she’ll present Girl from Cali, a provocative showcase of her new work at the Colombian consulate. Partly a narrative of her own feelings of displacement as a Colombian immigrant, the show includes “Restrictive Ties That Bind,” a meditation on the worldwide struggles of women, and “Running for Office,” an examination of the 2008 presidential primary race. The show is free and begins at 7 p.m. The exhibit lasts through October 30.
Oct. 2-30, 7 p.m., 2009
