Eating a regular candy bar is hard work, which is why the little ones are the fun-sized ones. Same thing with movies. So the selections in the Miami Short Film Festival are sized for maximum fun. Over the eight nights this week (November 8 to 15), more than 80 films from 40-odd countries will be shown and followed by Q&A sessions with the filmmakers. The action will be split over two venues, the Paragon Grove 13 (3015 Grand Ave., Coconut Grove) and the Miami Beach Cinematheque (1130 Washington Ave., Miami Beach), and all of the selections are under 20 minutes, perfect for the easily distracted and incontinent among us. Each program comprises a half dozen films, grouped by theme. “Bizarre Love Triangle,” for example, has four fresh takes on the love story, including one by young French talent Guillaume Legrand about a couple involved in child trafficking and others starring Rosanna Arquette and indie “it” actress-director Sophia Takal. “Stronger Sex” hits four continents over six films with complex female leads. Not all of us can stand to be around children for longer than 20 minutes, and so for us, there is “Blood Red Youth,” a selection of seven shorts that, with any luck, shows those tiny jerks having as hard a time at life as we real people do.
