Galleries can get stuffy, so every once in a while, the Museum of Contemporary Art (770 NE 125th St., North Miami) livens things up with a musical performance from a notable artist pushing the boundaries of his or her genre. In the past, MOCA has welcomed Gang Gang Dance, Kendrick Lamar, SZA, and others representing the best in experimental, hip-hop, and R&B.
No doubt that’s some stellar talent, but come this Friday, the museum will have to make extra room for a dance floor when L.A.’s Kingdom hits the decks. The DJ/producer is beloved by in-the-know beat junkies for a sensual, upbeat blend of R&B sensibilities and modern dance tempos. Signed to boutique label Night Slug, he recently began heading his own imprint, FadetoMind. Arrive ready to move, but leave the fist-pumping at home. His musical style fits right in with current trends toward a futuristic ’90s aesthetic, a kind of grown-and-sexy vibe that has artists all over the country turning down for chiller grooves. Both soulful and energizing, tracks such as his “Don’t Wait” remix will resonate in the unique environment amid MOCA’s collection.
