This weekend, Doug Varone and Dancers will be down from New York to break in the stage at the brand-spanking-new (and, we’re told, spectacular) South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center (10950 SW 211th St., Cutler Bay) with a trio of works from the company’s repertory. This is the kind of dance that deserves a great stage — Varone is known for stunning choreography that flows freely through athleticism, emotional resonance, and visual feats. On the program for Saturday at 8 p.m. are Lux (2006), Chapters From a Broken Novel (2010), and Boats Leaving (2006). For Boats Leaving, Varone has enlisted the nearby Coral Reef High School orchestra and chorus. The empathy for community dynamics that gives life to Varone’s choreography extends into real life. The company will offer an extensive program of community outreach for local high schools, along with a master class for professional dancers. Get a look behind the curtain, literally, with the pre-performance Talk Back, featuring Doug Varone and performance journalist Celeste Fraser Delgado (a former Miami New Times editor, holla!) at the center’s Black Box Theater at 7 p.m. Talk Back is free for ticketed audience members.
Sat., May 14, 8 p.m., 2011
