It won the American Book Award in 1999 and launched the Port-au-Prince-born author as an emerging literary talent. Since then, she has become the de facto voice of the Haitian diaspora. Her novels, memoirs, and essays led to a MacArthur Foundation fellowship. And this year, she’s the editor of Best American Essays 2011, which she will discuss at Books & Books.
