William Shakespeare’s Hamlet has seen many incarnations over the centuries: Hamlet in New York. Hamlet in Havana. Hamlet in modern times. Hamlet in the Old West. Even animated Hamlet. But you’ve never seen the Bard’s tale of crazy people doing crazy things in the hands of the Mad Cat Theatre Company. The Hamlet Dog and Pony Show, opening Friday at the Light Box at Goldman Warehouse (404 NW 26th St., Miami), is the theater company’s original psychedelic mindscrew that will take audiences in, through, and out of Hamlet by way of overstaged performances, musical deconstruction, and everything expected from Mad Cat’s darkly intellectual, subversive style. A layered and loose take on German playwright Heiner Muller’s postmodern version, HamletMachine, Mad Cat’s production features musical sampling and Prince’s Purple Rain, employed to brazenly elicit scorn toward and distrust of Shakespeare’s classic work. The performances are exaggerated, the sociopolitical messages are in your face, and most of all, the old tragedy of the Dutch prince is turned on its head to deliver a ball-tripping great time.
