Nestled into a three-martini lunch at the Algonquin Hotel, Dorothy Parker famously quipped: “This is not a novel to be tossed aside lightly. It should be thrown with great force.” So in the spirit of those with discerning literary tastes, and a Mad Men-level appetite for booze, Books & Books is hosting Algonquin Night this Thursday. At 7 p.m., indulge in a free wine tasting with Robin Goldstein and Alexis Herschkowitsch, authors of The Wine Trials. Then, head inside for author Brock Clarke, who recently wrote about a guy who burns down the homes of America’s great writers. (Calm down, it’s fiction.) He’ll preview his new book Exley, published by Chapel Hill, North Carolina’s Algonquin Books. The indie imprint’s Craig Popelars will be there to hawk their Fall titles: If you buy one of their books on Thursday, you’ll get one of their upcoming titles sent to you for free. The night bookends with more imbibing in the courtyard, this time with brew: Goldstein and Herschkowitsch also wrote The Beer Trials.
