Since 1990, the Alhambra Orchestra has performed high-class music throughout Miami-Dade County. The orchestra gives amateurs a chance to be heard and provides Miami-Dade residents with a way to get their live classical music fix without emptying their bank accounts, says Jody Atwood, a longtime cellist and former president of the orchestra. She has watched the group, which now boasts more than 50 members, grow and evolve. “I have made many friends,” says Atwood, a Miami Lakes resident, “and the music keeps getting better and better.”

This Saturday, the amateur community orchestra will celebrate its 20th season to the music of George Gershwin and others at the German American Club of Greater Miami. The birthday bash — along with an auction of musical instruments, artworks, and tickets to major cultural events — runs from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Tickets cost $25 and include dinner, and all proceeds go toward keeping this necessary organization alive.
