Big ideas about the human condition are constantly finding a resting place in the gravity defying kinetics of the body -- but for every piece about resistance or oppression are likely two about the unassuming charms of, say, twilight or zero gravity. The Miami City Ballet’s latest show melds breathtaking movement with refreshingly simple observations about the pleasures of prancing around in your pajamas, among other things. Lynne Taylor Corbett’s Chiaroscuro employs the three dimensional interplay of light and shadow. David Parsons brings another extravaganza about light to the table: Caught is a high energy spectacle that uses strategically timed strobe lights to create the illusion of levitation. Mark Morris’s Silhouettes is a playful jest in which two dancers clad in pajamas improvise and imitate each other. Trey McIntyre’s The Reassuring Effects of Form and Poetry is a gorgeous, conventional pastel ballet. Last, Shogun, by Ivonice Satie, honors the choreographer’s grandfather, whose mastery of the saber is at the center of this graceful meditation. The shows take place January 27 and January 28 at the Miami City Ballet Studios.
Fri., Jan. 27, 8 p.m.; Sat., Jan. 28, 2 & 8 p.m.
