Eight of Borscht 8's filmmakers call other locales home, places as near as New Orleans and Cuba and as far as South Africa. After all, the announcement points out, "you don't need to be anywhere specific to create world-class work, as long as you are surrounded by people who inspire you in a place you love."
"The future of independent film is in close-knit groups of regional filmmakers telling unique, daring stories using micro-budgets and unconventional production methods," it continues. "We hope our festival will become a forum for these filmmakers to share their work and ideas away from commercial pressures, and that these collaborations create an exchange and dialogue between various regional film centers, which are increasingly becoming the birthplace of some of the most interesting independent projects."
Adan Jodorowsky's The Voice Thief (yes, the one with the gold-dripping vagina) is on the lineup, as is a Borscht collaboration with New Orleans film collective Court 13, directed by Ray Tintori. Sean Metelerkamp, a South African known for his collaboration with Die Antwoord, will contribute Soul O, a joint project with Jacuzzi Boys, to Borscht's musician collaboration series. Nick Corirossi, known for his FunnyOrDie.com projects like Don Cheadle is Captain Planet, brings Miami 1996, a "nightmarish journey into Miami booty-bass," while Jillian Mayer and Lucas Leyva, the filmmakers behind Life and Times of Uncle Luke, have teamed up again on a project titled #PostModern.
Other noteworthy locals soon to show at Borscht include Coral Morphologic, Amy Seimetz, and New Times contributor Ronnie Rivera, AKA Bleeding Palm. The musician collaboration series will feature Jacuzzi Boys, Blowfly, Psychic Mirrors, and DJ Laz.
Borscht 8 takes place December 12-21 at the Arsht Center.
