As kids, we dreamed about swinging on a trapeze and twirling through the air from the minute we showed up at the circus until leaving the big top. As adults, we’ve accepted that we have to forget about such silly pursuits. But as it turns out, we still have a chance to experience those aerial feats at Flying Trapeze School in Bayfront Park. Students as young as 6 and as old as 82 have taken classes in the most exciting of the circus arts, which dates back more than 2,000 years. Despite the extreme thrills, school founders insist there is no danger thanks to stringent safety measures and double-line safety spotting systems. And, of course, there’s that net, which, let’s face it, might be the best part of the whole experience if we fall into it. “Our favorite part of a class is seeing the shocked look of accomplishment on people’s faces as they glance over their shoulders back at the trapeze, while walking away at the end of their class,” says one of the school’s founders. Professional trapeze artists hold classes every Wednesday through Sunday at 7 p.m., with additional session from 4 to 6 p.m. on weekends.
