If your heart doesn't melt at the plight of our city's homeless pups and kitties, you're probably Voldemort. After all, approximately 20,000 of these poor babies are killed every year at Miami-Dade Animal Services (MDAS).
But we know our readers aren't heartless bastards, so you'll be happy to hear that lots of local nonprofits work tirelessly to save lives and get animals adopted. Now, Adopt-a-Pet's website has created a handy-dandy, sharable Google map designed to let local animal lovers track down area rescue groups and available adoptables.

The map is actually in two parts: dog and puppy rescues and cat and kitten rescues. Plus, it can be embedded on your blog or website.
The effort is spearheaded by Adopt-a-Pet.com, North America's largest nonprofit pet adoption site. They help more than 12,000 animal shelters, humane societies, SPCAs, pet rescue groups, and pet adoption agencies advertise their homeless pets to millions of adopters a month. And it's free. Worthy cause, indeed!
"We wanted to visualize just how many pets are indeed available within a local area. We of course have thousands of dogs and cats listed on our website, but visually seeing how many groups are active in the community helps people remember just how convenient it is to consider adoption when looking for a new pet," said Jeff Howard of Adopt-a-Pet.com. The site also has a couple pages devoted to having dogs and cats in Miami.
There are tons of local spots to find a new friend, from Dachshund Rescue of South Florida to Riverfront Cats. From Great Danes to Siamese to every amazing mixed breed in the book, you can find your new family member somewhere in South Florida.
Most of these groups pull animals from high-kill shelters like MDAS and place them in foster homes or kennels until they're adopted. So support 'em, already!
