If seeing Babe: Pig in the City stirred up cravings for pork rinds and bacon rather than compassion for its curly-tailed star, the Homestead Rock'n Rib Fest is right up your alley.
Grillmasters from six eateries will battle for the title of "Best Rib." The war games will be judged by local notables, and competitors will include Hillbilly Huckleberry BBQ, Big Pig BBQ, Charlie's BBQ Shack, Sonny's BBQ, Alvi's Mobile Kitchen & Catering, and MM BBQ Catering. The audience will be able to purchase the spoils of war in the form of samples and full plates.
Should you tire of pork products, there'll be plenty of other edible options on hand, including barbecue of all kinds, snow cones, cotton candy, fried dough, roasted corn, and kettle corn.
And the overindulgence in all things pork is to benefit a good cause: the building fund for Pediatric Alternative Treatment, Care, Housing & Evaluation Services, Inc., also known as PATCHES. The health-care facility works to assist children with medical issues and their families.
Eaters can also nosh to the tunes of the Fire Brigade, the Gypsy Rose Band, and other local acts. Plus there'll be a bounce house and other fun stuff for children.
Let's hope you've recovered from your Thanksgiving-turkey tryptophan coma, 'cause a pork stupor is on its way. The festival kicks off Saturday at 11 a.m. at Harris Field Pavilion (1034 NE Eighth St., Homestead). Admission costs $10; kids under 10 get in free. Visit... More >>>
