The Miami Herald reported Wednesday that there's a Chad Pennington imposter tweeting on Twitter. The quarterback's supposed account talked about various meals and get-togethers with teammates, according to the story. Pennington said he isn't a member of any social networking websites.
However, Ramirez has two, Wade has four, and Chalmers has three Twitter accounts that all seem legitimate, so be wary of their updates. Even the athletes with only one account can easily be some practical-joking super-fan. Twitter allows parody accounts as long as the account can reasonably be identified as a joke. In the case of Pennington, there is only one account under his name and now it is known to be a hoax.
While it might be funny to some people to read that D-Wade thinks "Hockey is a ill sport" or that "I should start playing baseball" (two Tweets that appeared under username dwyanewade), some folks aren't laughing. St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony LaRussa is suing Twitter because he believes an imposter was painting him in an unflattering light.
One account that is certainly no phony is hurricanesports. UM launched a Twitter page June 3 that will update fans on all things Canes, including ticket information, athletic achievements, and scores.
The page figures to be a source for reliable Hurricane info, because after all, if the university can keep Sebastian's identity a secret, it certainly can maintain the sanctity of a Twitter account.
