St. Theresa Catholic School Students Win County Geography Bee, But Could You?
Last week, St. Theresa Catholic School crushed cross-town rivals Coral Gables Prep to win the Miami-Dade Geography Bee. Yes, we know, this news does not make up for the Pacers edging out the Heat last night. But before you go back to sticking pins in your Roy Hibbert voodoo doll, ask yourself this: could you have won the Geography Bee?
Here's the final question, which Coral Gables Prep missed and St. Theresa's nailed for the win: "What is the traditional name of the herders of Tanzania?"
Keep reading to see if you're smarter than a fifth grader.
The answer to the final question is the Maasai Mara.
Another question that St. Theresa's aced on the way to the final was: "What Hawaiian Island was established as a leper colony and still has a treatment center for leprosy?"
If you answered Devil's Island, you are close... but still dumber than a fifth grader. The correct answer is Molokai.
"This was something the students learned from their religion teacher, Mr. Del Sol when studying about St. Damian Joseph Devoster of Molokai," said Patsy Linares, a St. Theresa administrator.
St. Theresa's team consisted of Dibe Marie Di Gregorio, Marcel Van Hemert, Juan Luca Alvarez, Maria Del Pilar, Carolina De La Vega, Vincent Van Hemert, and Carlos Morales. The Catholic School beat 14 public schools by correctly answering 80 out of 85 questions.
Even more impressive was that St. Theresa's team included two second graders and two third graders, whereas almost everyone else in the tournament was in fifth grade.
The team was coached by Ms. Vanessa Ruiz.
