Miami-Dade Police confirmed officers shot and killed Ethan James Rincon last night. The 25-year-old had allegedly been roaming a street in Palmetto Bay with a pickaxe and was damaging cars. When officers confronted him, Rincon lunged at them, forcing them to shoot.
The incident began last night before 9:30. Police received calls that a man was walking through the neighborhood with an axe and was slicing car tires and smashing windows. He targeted six cars in the area of SW 88th Place and SW 183rd Terrace.
When police arrived, Rincon ran into his home and locked the doors. Rincon's family members arrived on the scene and gave police permission to enter the home.
That's when police say Rincon lunged at them. An officer shot him. A neighbor told CBS Miami that there were multiple shots, "like someone just emptying out a clip." Three officers were involved in the incident.
Officers performed CPR on Rincon, but paramedics pronounced him dead after they arrived.
Rincon had been arrested February 13. He was charged with two counts of battery and one count of disorderly intoxication. He was due to appear before a judge in April on those charges.
He had just celebrated his 25th birthday last Thursday.
