Over the Weekend - MLK Jr., Prescription Pot, Artopia and More
We hope you enjoyed the long weekend. It's amazing how relevant Martin Luther King Jr.'s words are in the current political climate, 40 years after his assassination. If you didn't know otherwise, these lines from some his speeches could easily have been delivered today:
A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual doom.
Our scientific power has outrun our spiritual power. We have guided missiles and misguided men.
We will have to repent in this generation not merely for the vitriolic words and actions of the bad people, but for the appalling silence of the good people.
While King Jr. was the focus of the weekend's activities and celebrations, the The Miami New Times had a celebration of its own, for our 20th Anniversary. Spam Allstars, Awesome New Republic, and Raffa & Rainer performed at the Artopia event at Parkwest Nightclub.
We are now only a week away from the Florida primary thanks to our rebellious nature (who needs to send delegates to the conventions, we just can't fight that election itch). As the presidential race heats up, and religion continues to be a key factor, we wondered Who Would Jesus Vote For? Today we bring you the first two entries in our series examining Jesus' thoughts on eight of the top presidential candidates. Each day leading up to the January 29 primary, we will post a new candidate evaluation by Jesus ending with his pick for our next Commander and Chief. Today Our Lord and Savior let's you know what he thinks about John McCain and John Edwards.
On Saturday, the Medicinal Marijuana Benefit Concert took over Tobacco Road. There was music, poetry, art, dance, pot politics, and plenty of tie-dye and Bob Marley T-shirts. Even one of the four people with a prescription for herb from the U.S. government was in attendance. Check out a slideshow from the event.
