On March 24, Philip Michael Thomas, former Miami Vice star, transformed the Miami City Commission chambers into a cheesy nightclub and belted out his latest musical inspiration, "My, My, My, MI AM I." Awestruck by Thomas's creative genius, the commissioners — well known for their sophisticated taste in music — voted unanimously to adopt the tune as the Magic City's official song. Sensing that he's got a really big hit on his hands, Thomas also plans to record the song in Spanish, French, German, and Japanese. In addition, city officials are hopeful the new anthem will spark a resurgence in tourism.

The normally alert New Times staff was caught by surprise. We weren't even aware the city was in the market for an official song. But we were quick to respond, and are confident it isn't too late.

New Times Music, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of New Times Newspapers, feverishly set to work last week, searching for that catchy melody, struggling with the words that would perfectly capture the essence of Miami. The result: "Oh My My, Where Am I — Miami." In keeping with the professionalism New Times brings to all its endeavors, the Magic City Loungers, featuring singing sensation Zac Vegas, were hired at great expense to record our humble efforts.

Unlike the politicians at city hall, we believe the selection of an official song is a matter of sufficient import that the citizenry should be consulted. Here is your opportunity. With a simple phone call, you can listen to both versions and vote for your favorite. You can also call Mayor Steve Clark's office and let him know what you think: 250-5300.

My, My, My, MI AM I
It's hot, it's cool, it's a tropical jewel
Paradise here in the sun
Crystal blue waters, wind surfers and sailors
Sand castles and kids by the sea
Colors that sparkle on buildings like ice cream
Come taste this wet wonderland
Football, baseball, basketball, Dolphins, Marlins, and Heat
Rich and the famous, Miami can't be beat
Lots of friendly faces, a tropical oasis
Twenty-four seven a day
It's hot, it's cool, it's a tropical jewel
My, My, My, Mi am i
My, My, My, Mi am i
Paradise here in the sun
Dog track and horse races, Seaquarium and sun-kissed faces
On sea planes, you can fly
Jai-Alai and vacation cruises, Grand Prix where no one loses
Underneath the romantic sky
Lovers and laughter in restaurants and after
Tickle your palate with cuisine
Coconut and mango, salsa and tango
Shows at Bayside everyday
Jazz and reggae, even some Broadway
Fun in the sun, moonlight over the bay
It's hot, it's cool, it's a tropical jewel
My, My, My, Mi am i
My, My, My, Mi am i
Paradise here in the sun
Undercover lover...magic in the air! Slip away...fall in love if you dare!
Miami arts...What a scene!
Chart a course...Live your dream!
It's hot, it's cool, it's a tropical jewel
My, My, My, Mi am i
My, My, My, Mi am i
Paradise here in the sun

OH MY MY, WHERE AM I — MIAMI
It's hot, you fool, there's a dead guy in the pool
Oh my my, where am I?
Paradise for those with guns
Sewer-fouled water for surfers and sailors
Refugees bobbing in the sea
Desperate people that sparkle and glisten
All boarding rafts for a fee
Football, baseball, basketball, Dolphins, Marlins, and Heat
Rich guys own them all, they're stinking lousy cheats
Lots of high-speed chases to solve murder cases
No more than seven a day
It's hot, you fool, there's a dead guy in the pool
Oh my my, where am I?
Oh my my, where am I?
Paradise for those with guns
Cheap dope and drag races, cops rousting homeless faces
On seaplanes you can crash
Garbage dumped from cruises, what's the harm — no one loses!
Someday we'll all get a rash
Lovers and laughter in Chrysler LeBarons
A rented car that's easy to spot
Lost tourists with mangos in 'hoods that are barren
Won't be long till they're shot
It's hot, you fool, there's a dead guy in the pool
Oh my my, where am I?
Oh my my, where am I?
Paradise for those with guns
Undercover lover...crack smoke in the air
Joey had a hooker, so cops plucked his pubic hair
How that smarts...Made him mean
Flew the coop...Blew the scene
It's hot, you fool, there's a dead guy in the pool
Oh my my, where am I?
Oh my my, where am I?
Oh my my, where am I?
Paradise for those with guns
