Miami Man Sentenced to 25 Years in Jail for Gouging Wife's Eyes
Eugene Roman may never see the errors of his own ways. Or much of anything in fact. He gouged out his own eyes with his finger back in 2005 while serving time for beating his wife. Shortly after the incident he was released, and his wife accepted him back into the house. Then, after she rebuffed his sexual advances, he gouged out her eyes too.
The incident happened back in May 2006, and Roman, now 50, went on a rage and violently attacked his wife, now 48. He dragged her around the home by her hair, and gouged at her eyes. She is now left totally blind in her right eye and partially blind in her left.
According to The Miami Herald, the wife had previously sought injunctions against Roman for domestic violence, once in 1996 and 2002. A 2005 attack put him behind bars, and it was then that he gouged out his own eyes. He was released early, and his wife agreed to take care of her now blind husband, but even while he depended on her he still became abusive.
Roman has been diagnosed with schizophrenia and depression.
"I want him away from me the rest of my life, and my children," the wife told the court. "He's said that before. He's asked for forgiveness the same way -- and he's still harmed me."
Jones has been sentenced to 25 years behind bars, and an additional ten years of probation.
